TRUE PYTHONS

Physical Characteristics - The head is not set off from the powerful body.  Both head and neck are a glossy brown-black to coal-black.  The body is  light brown with irregular crossbands of reddish-brown and dark brown to blackish encircling the entire body and merging in places.

Length - 5 - 9 feet.

Distribution and behavior - Found in Australia living in dry areas where rocky terrain is interspersed with brush and open woods.  If threatened, it arches up the anterior part of the body, flattens the throat and emits a hollow hissing sound.  Omnivorous, eating birds and mammals.  Immune to the bite of poisonous snakes.
