TRUE BOAS

Physical Characteristics - The head is longish and hardly set off from the neck at all.  the powerful body is equipped with a fully developed prehensile tail.  There are no heat-sensitive pits in the upper labials.  The  ground color of the body can be any shade ranging from yellowish-brown to reddish brown.  The back is covered with black rings that form chain-like rows  and may fade into each other in places.  In some specimens these dark rings are almost totally absent. 

Length - up to 6.5 feet.

Distribution and behavior - Found in Costa Rica to Argentina.  It prefers rocky terrain and woods and is also found on plantations.  Being an  excellent climber, it is found in trees as often as on the ground.  It eats  birds and mammals and becomes active in the evening. 


Physical Characteristics - The long head is barely set off from the  neck.  The ground color is a lovely, light, yellowish brown with large, dark  blotches on the back.  The blotches on the sides are much smaller, irregular in shape, and without the yellow centers characteristic of the E. murinus. A  wide, dark band connects the eye to the corner of the mouth.  The belly is  yellowish to porcelain colored and mottle with black.

Length - Over 10 feet and sometimes up to 16 feet.

Distribution and behavior - This species comes from southern Brazil,  Bolivia, Paraguay, and northern Argentina.  Like its larger cousin it loves the  water and is found near all kinds of bodies of water.  It also inhabits less dense places in wet forests.  Its swimming and diving are developed to perfection, and it can stay under water for a very long time.  It usually stays  on land and seldom climbs trees.  It eats birds and mammals.
