SAND BOAS

Physical Characteristics - The head is hardly set off from the neck at all.  The upper jaw clearly projects beyond the lower one, and the rostral plate  at the tip of the snout is very strongly developed, relfecting its funtion for  digging.  The sides of the body are gray to brownish, and dark brown blotches form an irregular band of lozenge shapes down the back.  There are regularly  spaced dark blotches on the sides. 

Length - 12 -24 inches; rarely up to 32 inches.

Distribution and behavior - The sand boa ranges from southeastern Europe to south western Asia and northern Africa.  It inhabits steppe- or  desert-like wastlands with sparse vegetation, and it is found on flatland as well as in hilly country.  The snake spends most of the time hiding under stones and in the ground and emerges only in the morning and early evening.
