SILKY TERRIER

[Advertising Rates]

History - In the late 1800s, Yorkshire  Terriers were brought to Australia from England. These dogs had steel blue and  tan cat coloration  and were bred with the native blue and tan Australian Terriers in an effort to improve the latter's coat color while retaining its  more robust conformation.  The breed was recognized by the AKC in 1955 and at this time the name was changed from Australian Silky Terrier to Silky Terrier.  This is not a very popular breed and is slow to attract admirers.

Temperament - This is a mellow lapdog.  Its bold, feisty, inquisitive and playful, always ready for action.  Its a terrier at heart.  It can be aggressive toward other dogs or pets.  Can be mischievous and barks a lot.

Upkeep - Requires slightly more exercise than most toy breeds.  Enjoys walks, but enjoys a romp in the yard just as well.  This is an indoor dog and should not be expected to live outside.  Prefers to live around the family and interact with them.  Its silky coat needs  brushed every other day.  Young pups should be brushed regularly to get them  used to being brushed.

Size - Both males and females can reach a  maximum weight of 11 pounds and reach heights of 9-10 inches.
