History - Shih Tzu means lion dog,  designating the breed to be the most esteemed animals in China because of its associations with Buddhism.  Even though this breed is often related to China its origins point toward Tibet.  It has a similar history with the Pekingnese.  This dog was highly prized by royal families.  It was recognized by the AKC in 1969 and is one of the most popular of the toy dogs.

Temperament - Very sweet and spunky.  It  loves to play and romp and is affectionate toward its family and good with  children.

Upkeep - Needs daily exercise.  Does not do well in humid weather and should never be expected to live outdoors.  Its coat needs brushing every other day.

Size - 9-16 pounds; 10.5 inches in height
