SAMOYED

History - The Samoyed is named after the  ancient nomadic people.  These people depended upon heards of reindeer for food,  and had to keep on the move in order that the reindeer could find sufficient  food for themselves.  These nomads also depended on this dog to protect the herd  of reindeer from predators of the Arctic.  These dogs lived with the family  inside the hide tents and kept the children warm.  In 1906 the Samoyed came to  America.

Temperament - The Samoyed is gentle and playful and makes a good companion dog for any child or person.  This is a  family dog that has strong bonds with the family in which it lives. It is  usually friendly with strangers, other pets and dogs.  This is a clever and  sometimes mischievous breed who needs a lot of exercise.  Sometimes it tends to  herd children into a small group.

Upkeep - The Samoyed is a very active breed and needs a lot of exercise everyday.  It loves to pull things and herd  and loves the cold weather. It prefers to live indoors with its human family.   Its thick coat needs brushing 2-3 times a week or daily when shedding.

Size - Males can weigh up to 65 pounds and females up to 50 pounds.  The shoulder height of a male can reach 23.5 inches  and the female up to 21 inches.
