NORWEGIAN ELKHOUND
History - The Elkhound is an unusual hound because its roots lie in the spitz breeds, which it still closely resembles. Its placement in the Hound Group relfects its hunting ability because the breed hunts like a hound. Still, this is a breed of many skills. The AKC recognized the breed around 1930, and it has enjoyed moderate popularity since then.
Temperament - A breed that is bold, playful, independent, alert, boisterous and unlike most hounds, even protective. A dog ready for adventure and happiest if outdoors in cold weather.
Upkeep - The Elkhound was developed to hunt all day under grueling conditions. It needs daily exertion in order to feel satisfied. It can live outdoors in temperate to cool climates, but it is happiest living with its family. Its coat needs brushing twice a week.
Size - Males 55 pounds and females 48 pounds; males reach 20.5 inches in height and females reach 19.5 inches in height.
