History - The Manchester was developed in England in the late 19th century to control rats and to track small game. Temperament - Manchesters are affectionate with their families but reserved with strangers and can be nippy and protective otheir food bowls. They are accepting of gentle children over about eight years old and, if socialized with them early, small animals such as cats. Although they usually get along with other dogs, some may try to be dominat or aggressive. Therefore, they must be obedience trained and socialized early. They will definitely bark when strangers knock on the door. These low-maintenance dogs are ideal for city or apartment living. Upkeep - Manchesters require only a quick weekly brushing. They need brisk daily walks or vigorous romps and playtimes with other dogs or their owner in a secured area. Size - height 10-12 inches, weight 7-12 pounds (toy); height 15-16 inches, weight 12-22 pounds. |
