History - The Kuvasz is considered a Hungarian breed and has its roots grounded with the giant dogs of Tibet. The meaning of the name means the armed guard of nobility. This dog is capable of taking down bears and wolves. In the early days of its existance if was often found among the commoners who put them to work herding livestock. Because the Kuvasz was found among the Germans, it was almost wiped out during the World Wars. It was imported to America in the 1930s and recognized by the AKC in 1935. Temperament - Despite its tough looks this dog is a tough protector, fearlessley defending the family and home. It is very gentle and protective of the children of the same family and may misinterpret the roughness of play with an attack from child friends of the family. Upkeep - The Kuvasz needs plenty of exercise. It loves cold climates and does best when it is allowed inside and outside of the house. Its coat needs brushed about 2 times a week. Size - The males can reach weights up to 115 pounds and the females 90 pounds. The height of a male dog is 28 - 30 inches and the female dog 26 - 28 inches. |
