AFFENPINSCHER |
||||||||||
History - Affen means monkey and Pinscher means terrier. In France the dog is named is "diablotin moustachu" meaning moustached little devil. This is one of the oldest toy breeds. The origin of the breed is not clear. Smaller versions of these dogs were preferred for lady's lap dogs. They could kill mice and entertain the family with its antics. These dogs were occasionally crossed with the Pug, German Pinscher, and German Silky Pinscher. In 1936 the AKC recognized this breed even though they are rare in America and Germany. Temperament - The Affenpinscher lives up to its name in both looks and actions. It is a terrier being busy, inquisitive, bold and stubborn, yet being a monkey it loves to monkey around. It likes to bark and climb. It is good with other dogs and is best with family. Upkeep - It needs exercise. Indoor exercise is fine because of its small size. It loves to romp in the yard, but cannot live there. This is a house dog. Its coat needs to be combed 2-3 times per week. Size - Can grow to a massive 9 pounds, with a height of 11.5 inches. |
