The Angora is certainly as recognizable as any other longhaired breed in the world; and even though its fortunes do not compare with the Perisians, the two cats share a parallel history. Nearly two and a half centuries ago Angora cats existed in the region surrounding the city of Angora, now called Ankara. At the same time another variety of longhaired cat was associated with the province of Chorazan in Persia. According to early observers, there was virtually no difference between Angora and Persian cats then. The French naturalist Count de Buffon, writing in the mid-eighteenth century, observed that Persian cats, “except in color... have a perfect resemblance to the cat of the Angora.” Persians were all gray. Angoras occurred in black, white, deep red, light fawn, mottled gray, and even smoke colors.
