The Egyptian Mau is a natural breed, thought to be descended from the ancient cats of Egypt which were worshipped and held sacred. According to Natalie Troubetskoye, the woman responsible for bringing them into the United States, the name Mau is another name for cat and is unnecessary in the name. However, in all association which accept it as a breed, it is known by this name and will be referred to here as such. It is a pure breed and the only natural breed of spotted domestic cat.
These cats, like the Abyssianian, are believeed to be descended from the spotted variety of Felis lybica called the Felis lybica ocreata which came from the highlands of Ethiopia to Egypt. This breed became domesticated and individuals were found in northeastern and southwestern parts of Africa, Italy, Arabia and Libya.
The personality of this cat is interesting. Members of the breed are reported to have good memories and are basically very loving, though somewhat shy. They tend to attach themselves to one or two people. They love to ride shoulders and will sit and sleep in your lap. They chirp rather like a bird and can be playful and gentle. Built for agility, they are very active cats, easily trained, and often learn tricks by themselves. Despite their builds, they are strong and muscular.
