These cats wee originated by Nikki Horner of Shawnee Catery. They are a man-made hybrid breed, not a natural breed or unplanned mutation. Two already established breeds were crossed to produce the Bombay. The black fur seems to shine, and eyes are a new-penny copper against a jet black coat. They were named, it seems, for the black leopard of India and are referred to also as "mini panthers."
The two original breeds used to produce the Bombay were a black American Shorthair and Burmese. Only the best of the two breeds was used, and the Bombay combines the black color and hardy type of the black American Shorthair and the sleek coat of the Burmese. The Bombay was accepted by CFA for championship status on May 1, 1976.
They have an even temperament and are quite playful, although not too talkative. They get along well with other cats. They are affectionate and like to be close to their owner.
